Diagnostics: what they cost and why

The diagnostic for desktops and gaming PCs is a flat $50. The diagnostic fee is charged on its own and is not credited toward the repair.

The diagnostic is charged on every job. It pays for real testing time, and you get written findings plus a quote. Nothing gets repaired until you approve that quote. If you decide not to go ahead, you pay for the diagnostic and pick up your PC.

  • Desktop or gaming PC diagnostic, $50: hardware and software testing, written findings, and a quote. On gaming PCs it also covers CPU/GPU load testing, temperatures, and crash reproduction, at the same flat price.
  • Laptop diagnostic, $50: testing and written findings on what's wrong. Not credited toward anything. Besides cleaning and battery replacement, laptop repairs aren't offered; see laptop services.

House policies

  • Quote before work. Nothing goes over the approved amount without a new OK. Any change over $25 or 10% is re-approved by text.
  • Your data: you're responsible for backups unless you buy a backup service. I don't browse personal files beyond what the job requires.
  • Pickup: PCs not picked up within 30 days of the "ready" notice may be charged a storage fee.

Parts

  • Customer-supplied parts are welcome. Any problem with the part itself goes through its manufacturer.
  • If a customer part is dead on arrival or incompatible, re-work time is billed at the bench rate. I'll tell you up front.
  • Used or pulled parts get tested first, and the labor may be quoted higher.
  • If I source parts, the written quote lists labor, each part (brand/model and price), sales tax if it applies, the total, and a turnaround estimate. I get your "yes" in writing before ordering.
  • Special orders need a deposit up front, and I'll say clearly whether it's refundable once ordered.

What moves the price

Up: small or cramped cases, custom water loops, heavy dust, nicotine, or corrosion, intermittent problems that are hard to reproduce, failing drives with data to save, data jobs over 3 TB, used or mismatched parts, rush requests, and BIOS recovery after a failed flash.

Down: bundled services, customer parts that are ready and compatible, simple part swaps, and jobs combined into one visit.
